Advice from my Labrador Retrievers

December 19, 2022

My Labrador Retrievers tell me remember what is really important in this life (for them that would be breakfast, dinner and naps in the sun) and ignore all the silly stupid stuff. Funny advice from creatures who are so easily distracted…. SQUIRREL!!!

But seriously, they have a point. We work really hard during the year, doing what we think is important but missing the finer details in our lives as we speed through the working week. Time goes fast and you will never be able to claw it back.

I am a gardener and am content to spend a beautiful day digging in the dirt. When I do this, the time slows down and I become an observer. I notice the angry toad who emerged from the rock wall to glare at me when I removed the leaves at the entrance to his home. I notice that the funny weed thing that I’ve been pulling out for years is really a tiny native orchid. My world becomes richer because I am aware.

When I garden I am in the present. I am not worrying about what happened in the past or what might happen in the future. When I am in the present I am aware of the richness of my life and the world around me. I am grateful for the love and support of my family. And, I can ignore the silly stupid stuff.

The onset of Winter and the end of the year brings on similar reflections. May you find that peace and comfort and joy in the reflection of your own life and world.

Best wishes for the Holiday Season and the coming New Year.
